Washdog / Illuminate Adelaide Studios Residency 2024

The Washdog / Illuminate Adelaide Studio Residency offers a 12-month rent-free shared studio / office space for a South Australian artist at the Washdog artist studio in Kent Town. This opportunity is intended for artists who have a demonstrated commitment to their practice and are looking to extend their work and experiment with digital and new media art-making tools and processes.

The Opportunity

As an open plan shared space of artist studios across a range of media, Washdog is a generous and collaborative environment. This opportunity is open to eligible emerging or mid-career artists who may or may not already be making work with computer-based processes. This residency is intended for artists looking to learn new digital skills to expand on an already existing practice and ideas in a supportive and collaborative space geared towards exchange of skills and knowledge.

The recipient of this residency has the freedom to direct their desired outcome of the opportunity and can expand on this in the application form. The creation of a new work is not a required outcome, however, Illuminate Adelaide will consider work developed and produced during this residency to be included in the 2025 or 2026 City Lights program. 

The Washdog / Illuminate Adelaide Studio Residency offers:

  • 12-month rent-free studio office space, from November 2024—November 2025
  • A dedicated desk space with access to shared studio and workshop space, and features 24/7 access, plus shared kitchen
  • Exposure to a great community and network of active artists and creative practitioners from different medium to share, support, exchange skills and bounce off ideas
  • Specific technical skillsets in the studio include: Touchdesigner, Blender, Adobe suite, 3D printing - Skill development outcomes could include projection mapping, animation, 3D modelling, interactive and generative programming, LED light programming
  • Utilities (electricity, internet, water) included
  • City fringe location, on King William Street, Kent Town
  • Technical assistance
  • Shared connections to a network of suppliers and services (materials and industrial fabrication)

The Washdog / Illuminate Adelaide Studio Residency does NOT include insurance for theft of individuals belongings. Each resident is required to have Public Liability insurance (20 million minimum coverage) before induction. We recommend Public Liability insurance be organised through Guildhouse, or the National Association of Visual Arts (NAVA).

Selection Criteria

  • This opportunity is open to all artists at any stage in their career
  • Applying artists must be a current and ongoing resident of South Australia for the next 12 months
  • The residency will prioritise applicants with a defined artistic practice
  • Applicants should demonstrate a desire and intention to learn new skills in digital and new media.
  • Current tenants or individuals who have rented the studio in the last 6 months are not eligible to apply for this residency.
